About Catherine Richards Golini
Combining expertise in healthcare communication, corpus linguistics and AI literacy
Who I Am
I am a medical writer and editor specialising in patient education across oncology, haematology, rare diseases and women’s health. I also hold a PhD in corpus linguistics — the computational analysis of real language data — which gives me a deeper understanding of language and how AI language models generate text, not only how to prompt them.
That combination is unusual, and it is the reason this training exists. Much AI training is delivered either by technology specialists with little experience of healthcare communication or by healthcare professionals who are still relatively new to generative AI. My background sits between those two worlds.
How I Got Here
Before specialising in patient communication, I spent nearly two decades teaching medical English and communication skills to healthcare professionals. My doctoral research in corpus linguistics and patient information grounds the work I do now.
My comfort with technology isn’t recent, either — I qualified in network and computer systems administration in 2000. I came to generative AI as someone who already understood both the technology itself and what good patient communication requires.
I maintain a practical interest in how AI tools, including ChatGPT and other large language models, are changing healthcare communication and the practice of medical writing. This includes research comparing how large language models perform when producing plain language summaries, presented at ISMPP Europe, alongside further work examining the deeper structure of AI-generated phrasing.
Why I Developed This Training
Patient advocacy groups and charities are caught between two pressures:
Legitimate concerns about accuracy, disclosure, transparency and authenticity
Mounting pressure to adopt AI because these tools are rapidly becoming part of everyday working life
There is a third thing I think worth saying
For under-resourced organisations, generative AI opens up work that was previously out of reach:
Materials tailored to specific audiences,
Faster orientation in the medical literature
Plain-language drafting without a professional writing budget,
Support for everyday communications, and a quicker starting point for many routine tasks
For a small or volunteer-led patient organisation, that can be the difference between producing nothing and producing something genuinely useful.
The point of the training is not to sell you on AI, and not to warn you off it. It is to help organisations decide, case by case, when AI is genuinely useful, when human expertise matters more, and how to use these tools efficiently, effectively and ethically.

How I Work
My workshops are practical, jargon-free and built around the realities of regulated healthcare communication.
The AI Foundation Workshop
Participants receive practical frameworks they can apply immediately: understanding when AI helps and when it doesn’t, writing better prompts, choosing appropriate AI tools for medical content, and following a verification workflow that protects clinical accuracy and maintains trust.
The AI Policy Workshop
This workshop gives organisations something tangible to take away: a completed AI policy, developed collaboratively during the session and ready for trustee review and approval.

I work with patient advocacy groups and charities of all sizes, and I price accordingly.
If you’re a two-person organisation with a limited budget, I’m very amenable to delivering training at a price you can afford. Every couple of months I also offer the Foundation Workshop free of charge for organisations with no training budget.
